I am really debating about whether or not to post my Nano. If I do, it'll probably be on my website rather than LJ - no way in hell is this thing publishable, so it isn't like it's going to do it any harm :D Maybe I'll wait until it's done. Maybe I will chicken out of posting it. I don't know yet :D

“Professor Meg Callahan was the woman who decided that it was a good idea to banish all non-humans to a life of misery. It would truly be a miracle if her oldest child felt differently, wouldn’t it?”

Amber gaped at him. It had been Gwen’s mum who’d condemned him to a life here, him and everyone else who was different? She’d thought that Gwen’s mother had simply been a lecturer, only interested in the academic theory behind the barriers and here she was advising that it was a good idea to throw people away rather than try and think of a way to help them.

“You see,” Lowell said softly and quietly, “You can’t trust any of them.”

“I can trust Gwen,” Amber said straight away but with considerably less force than she’d have said it the day, or even the hour before. The revelation about Gwen’s mother had surprised her a lot. She’d always respected Professor Callahan, even if the Professor hadn’t liked her very much. She hadn’t thought her the sort of woman to do something like that, anyway.

Lowell looked sceptical, “I thought you said that she didn’t want you to come and talk to me about this.”

ETA:
Hooray for you! I think that this might end up being longer than I expected, but I really, really like the story. I like all the characters, I especially love my plot and I am, in all, very happy with all of it but the writing and that was never going to be great anyway.

I've also just had a plot idea that, should I follow it, would make the story much better, I think, but also much much longer *wibbles* Decisions, decisions.

ETA

28,006 / 50,000
(56.0%)

The woods were dark. Amber didn’t usually mind the dark. It very rarely held things scarier than she knew herself to be on full moon nights and she didn’t like being scared of anything that she could eat for breakfast one night out of twenty-nine. This, however, this was different. The darkness seemed ... thicker. It didn’t look inky, as she’d so often heard darkness described. It looked murky, soupy, like swamp water - and swamp water raised the possibility of slimy things with teeth that wriggled under one’s feet. Amber shuddered, imagining things with long, spidery fingers and yellow curling talons reaching out of the trees and tangling their hands in her hair, running their fingers up and down her cheek.

She realised that she’d fallen slightly behind, and hurried to catch up. Gwen turned her head slightly and murmured, “Don’t fall back. I don’t want you to get lost,” she said, and Mike turned round. Amber jumped a little; the reflection from her torch almost made his eyes look like they were glowing.

Heh. College should give me more frees. Another 1087 down, making my new total word count 14,462. If I get to 16,000 tonight, then I've done the equivalent of 2,000 a day.

I'm starting to worry about my plot. I think I'm more than half-way through what I had planned and I'm only about a third of the way through the word-count, and I don't know if I can carry on what I've got for 35,000 words. I might have to do some replotting later on, and go back through what I've got and slow that down a little.

This second week is apparently the week in which the most people give up, so we'll see how well it goes from hereon in. I'm getting the hang of the characters and I've a few tricks up my sleeve that I am really looking forward to writing :D

I've done five chapters so far, all of which seem horribly short, but never mind! Lots of short chapters make me feel more accomplished ... or something.

In order to celebrate twenty per cent of my goal achieved, I am going to post, not an extract, but a Microsoft Word auto-summary.

Amber nodded, soundlessly.

Amber groaned. Amber’s face fell. Amber said nothing. Amber frowned. “Gwen?”

******

Gwen was here. Gwen was here. Amber said nothing. Amber was intrigued. Gwen shrugged eloquently. Amber nodded sadly. Amber turned around. Amber stayed silent. “Sure,” Amber said. Gwen asked.

Well, finally, Amber thought. Gwen asked, frowning.

Amber frowned. Gwen asked.

In here, I am planning to at least keep a diary of the Nano process, and to post some extracts that don't suck too badly.

My working title is Bad Moon Rising, hence the awful, awful pun involved.

So, er. I suppose I should get writing.

Right now,the thing that is amazing me the most is the fact that I'm actually on target, and have been everyday. The number of words that I actually write tends to vary but I've not ended a day behind yet. Five days in, and I'm feeling confident. Hopefully, I'll be at 9k by midnight, and I want to get to 11k tomorrow, leaving only 1.5k to do on Sunday.

Word count: 8455
